Sugar Cane Dinner Train
The Sugar Cane Train , the first train used in West Maui for sugar cane production, began operating around 1890 and continued until around 1950. The train hauled tons of raw sugar cane to the mill to be processed for the 60 years it operated. The sugar cane train was retired when motorized trucks and mechanical claws proved more efficient and cost effective.
It wasn't until 1969 that the sugar train had new life breathed into it by A.W. "Mac" McKelvy who got together with the Makai Corporation and created the Lahaina, Ka'anapali & Pacific Railroad. Better known as "The Sugar Cane Train", the line has operated passenger service from Lahaina to Pu'ukoli'i(just north of Ka'anapali) daily for over 30 years.
Since 1970, over five million tourists to Maui have ridden the train making it one of West Maui's most popular attractions. With a blast of its steam whistle, the locomotive chugs along a six-mile long stretch of track at a leisurely pace, as its passengers are entertained Hawaiian-style by our narrators.
