Franko’s Map of Oahu, The Gathering Place

Franko’s Map of Oahu, The Gathering Place

Side 1 shows Franko’s Map of Oahu, with a view of the whole island, it’s mountain ranges shown in beautiful green shaded relief, as well as it’s freeways and major roads, plus creeks, trails and things to see or places to go.  Beyond the island, the ocean waters are shown in beautiful shades of tropical ocean blue, indicating ocean depth contours.  All about the island there are descriptions of it’s fabulous scuba and snorkeling spots, famous surfing spots, and great places to visit.  Favorite dive spots include Hanauma Bay, possibly the most snorkeled spot on earth, and also Magic Island right next to Waikiki, the wreck of the Y0-257, which is visited by the Atlantis tourist submarine right out of Waikiki, the M/V Mahi on Oahu’s west where eagle rays soar by, Turtles, where numerous green sea turtles can been seen on almost any day, U’lua Cave, or Black Rock, where white tip reef sharks guard a big cave, and many more.  The North Shore not only features dive spots like Shark’s Cove, Snagles, Turtle Street and Hale’iwa Trench, but also great surfing spots like Sunset Beach, Banzai Pipeline, Waimea Bay, Chun’s Reef, Laniakea, and Hale’iwa.  Follow Franko’s map to Laniakea and check out the old, 300-pound green sea turtles grazing on the algae right at the beach, or even resting on the beach there, as they have for thousands of years.  The East Shore shows  the map owner where to find the Polynesian Cultural Center (the PCC to the locals), the Mormon Hawaii Temple, which is probably the most beautiful edifice in the State of Hawaii, and Sandy Beach, famous for it’s body-whomping heavy shorebreak, which commonly ruins a few unwary tourists’ vacations, as they find out just how powerful the beautiful ocean can be.  Around the map there is a collection of artwork of tropical fish, which are named in Hawaiian and English, and depicted in a reef environment with photos by Franko.

Side 2 shows Franko’s Map of Waikiki & Oahu South Shore Details.  The entire South Shore from Honolulu to Makapu’u Head, Oahu’s easternmost point, is shown so that the viewer can get a close-up view of the island topography, including Diamond Head Crater.  More things to do, places to visit, dive and diving sites are shown.  The highlight of this side of the map is the superbly detailed map of Waikiki, which shows where everything is, including most of the hotels, Kapiolani Park, Ala Moana Beach Park, Waikiki Beach, the Ala Moana Shopping Center, the International Market Place, over 200 buildings, the DFS Galleria, the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, Ala Wai Harbor, Ala Wai Canal, Ala Wai Golf Course, and much more.  Local well known surfing, snorkeling and diving spots are shown with descriptions as well.  This map of Waikiki is the very best there is, except for the one that appears on Franko’s Map of Waikiki and Oahu with Things to See and Do. In depth topographical map of Oahu with detailed listing of beaches dive sites and the tropical fish in the area. Printed on waterproof tear-resistant paper. Measures 21 x 14 open 7 x 4.25 folded.

Franko’s Map of Maui, The Valley Isle

Franko’s Map of Maui, The Valley Isle

Side 1 shows Franko’s Map of Maui  with it’s beautiful mountains rising up from its 120 miles of coastline in green shaded relief, with it’s ocean blues descending in color the deeper you go away from the island.  Maui’s main roads and highways are detailed all around and through the island.  The road map goes from the Kapalua, Ka’anapali and Lahaina on the far western part of Maui, around the West Maui Mountains to Kahului and Wailuku, and then south to Kihei, Wailea and Makena.  On the eastern side of Maui, the roads take you on the 37-mile uphill route to the very roof of the island, at Haleakala National Park.  At 10,000 feet elevation, Haleakala will remind you of your most recent visit to some other planet - like Mars.  Some folks like to go up the mountain in the wee hours of the morning in order to coast down, down, down on exhilarating bicycle rides.  Franko is a life-long avid bicyclist, but I’m not so sure this is for beginners or non-proficient riders - could be a bit dangerous due to speed potential and motorists.  The Road to Hana is also detailed.  This is the most famous, scenic drive in Maui, and it is certainly one of the most beautiful and scenic drives anywhere in the world.  The road starts in Pa’ia and ends in Hana, although most people like to go beyond Hana to the wonderful 7 Pools of Ohe’o to frolic amidst waterfalls and deep swimming holes.  Some folks like to continue back to there origination via the island’s southern route.  The view of the sea and the steep upslope of the mountain is absolutely stunning - perhaps just as interesting as the much more famous Road to Hana drive.  However, Maui’s Southern route is not always that easy - it is extremely narrow in parts, it is a dirt road in parts, and after a long drive on the Hana Highway it may be late and getting dark on the return trip.  All around Maui the offshore fun is depicted too, as dozens of snorkeling and scuba diving sites are located with descriptions of what might be found in each spot.  To enhance the underwater story of Maui, numerous tropical reef creatures are shown, making this map a sort of reef creatures guide as well.  Snorkeling is Maui’s number one activity and this map beautifully shows it all off.  Dive sites detailed include everybody’s favorite -  Molokini Island - where water visibility might exceed 200 feet.  Many other sites include Turtle Town, where you are 99% sure to see green sea turtles, Olowalu, Maui’s top snorkeling site, Kapalua Beach, right at the world’s nicest beach according to Sunset Magazine, and La Perouse Bay, where you might have spinner dolphins buzz by beneath you as you snorkel.  Franko’s Map of Maui is also Maui’s surfing map.  There are over 30 of Maui’s most notable and known surfing sites located and described on the map.  Maui is not quite as famous as Oahu for surfing, but Maui’s surfers and thousands of surfing tourists who come to Maui just to surf, know that Maui definitely has the surfing spots.  The caption in the title block of this map says, Maui no ka oi, which is Hawaiian for Maui is the Best.  The colors and style of this map are generated out of pure inspiration and love of Maui.  Studying Franko’s Map of Maui is purely inspirational in itself, and it will force you to set your sites on visiting Maui again.

Side 2 shows Franko’s Map of Maui County   The Franko’s Maps of the Hawaiian Islands series wouldn’t be complete without details of the rest of Maui County - and that includes The Friendly Isle, Molokai, and The Private Isle, Lanai.  Molokai is detailed from it’s desert-like western half, to it’s mountainous, jungle-filled eastern half, and from it’s southern side’s string of ancient Hawaiian fish ponds to the northern coast’s historic Kalaupapa peninsula, the site of Hawaii’s old leper colony.  Lanai is notable for it’s numerous fabulous dive sites from Turtle Haven in the northwest, which is actually 15-mile long reef facing Maui’s western end, around to the famous southern spots of The CThedrals, and Huopo’e Bay.  Lanai is a common scuba dive and snorkeling tour boat destination out of Lahaina on Maui.  Lanai City and Lanai’s most notable landmarks and peaks are detailed on the map as well.  The Maui County side of Franko’s Map of Maui has a beautiful aerial photograph of from straight overhead of Molokini Island.  There are usually one or two dozen snorkeling tour boats moored within the crater of Molokini, each with dozens of snorkelers and a few scuba divers.  Details of the various dive sites, such as En’e nu’e, Tako flats, and Garbonzo’s Lair are shown.  The crescent-shape of the island-crater is superbly shown by this helecopter perspective.  Side 2 also shows colorful underwater photos taken by Maui’s most joyful dive instructor, the famous Rachel Domingo of Maui Dreams Dive Company.  Say Hi to Rachel for me when you are in Kihei. In depth topographical map of Maui with detailed listing of beaches dive sites and the tropical fish in the area. Printed on waterproof tear-resistant paper. Measures 21 x 14 open 7 x 4.25 folded

Franko’s Map of Hawaii, The Big Island

Franko’s Map of Hawaii, The Big Island

Side 1 shows Franko’s Map of Hawaii with an amazing shaded relief depiction of the island as it ascends from the sea to nearly 14,000 feet on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.  These volcanoes, plus the very active Kilauea, as well as Hualalai and the inactive Kohala mountains in the very northern panhandle of the Big Island are clearly shown, along with the roads that circumnavigate and cut across the island.  Shaded in a gray tone, the major lava flows from the last 200 years are depicted, indicating just how volatile the underlying volcanics of Hawaii are in this era.  The various scuba diving and snorkeling sites that are the delight of millions of tourists are shown.  Most of them are along the leeward side of the island, from Kawaihae and Kohala, down through the Kona Coast to South Kona.  They include places to see the magnificent Manta Rays at night, as well as sites to see an absolute myriad of tropical reef creatures (almost everywhere along the coast).  A few dive sites are also shown in the Hilo area.  As a prominent dive shop owner said, Well, the water does go ALL the way around the island, you know.  Yes, there is good diving over there too.  Dozens of colorful tropical reef creatures swimming amid the corals of the reef are depicted.  They include the Humuhumu Nukunuku Apua’a, the Hawaii State Fish, of course, plus many butterflyfish, surgeonfish, wrasse, unicorn fish, and many more.  The Na’ia, Hawaiian for dolphin, and the Kohola, which means whale, are also shown.

Side 2 shows Franko’s Map of Hawaii zooms in on the Kona Coast, Hilo, Kilauea and Kailua-Kona, and has a fantastic view of the whole chain of The Hawaiian Islands, as it stretches hundreds of miles across the middle of the vast North Pacific Ocean.  In the  wonderful close-up of the Kona Coast, with diving and snorkeling spots located and described, plus locations of many places to see or visit along the Kona Coast, such as the Captain Cook monument, golf courses, or resorts.  The Hilo area with it’s many waterfalls and other features is detailed with it’s major roads and features.  No Big Island map could be complete without a detail of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and specifically the Kilauea Volcano.  Lava flows from the last few decades of very active eruptions are shown with their flow dates.  This detail of Franko’s Map of Hawaii has to be frequently updated, because the lava keeps rearranging the landscape!  You will note the extensive and on-going lava flows rolling down the flanks of Kilauea to the Pacific Ocean.   This is a fascinating look at America’s literal growth, as acres are added to the Big Island every year.  The constant eruptions and vast lava flows have caused a considerable revamping of the Kilauea map detail each year. In depth topographical map of Kauai with detailed listing of beaches dive sites and the tropical fish in the area. Printed on waterproof tear-resistant paper. Measures 21 x 14 open 7 x 4.25 folded.

Franko's Map of Kaua'i, The Garden Isle

Side 1 shows Franko’s Map of Kauai  with the whole island in stunning shades of green rising up from it’s nearly circular shoreline to Wai’ale’ale, the rainiest spot on earth at the islands center.  Every steep canyon of the Na Pali Coast can be seen, as can the islands huge canyons and eight major rivers that descend down from Wai’ale’ale.  Waimea Canyon forms a deep gash in the landscape, as can be clearly seen on this map.  The intricacies of the coast can be traced, from Hanalei Bay and Kilauea Point on the North; to Kapa’a and Lihue on the East; to Koloa, Po’ipu and Port Allen on the South; and to the remote and steep Na Pali Coast on the West.  The ocean depths are traced in descending hues of blue, resembling the actual beauty that surrounds Kauai.  Dozens of Hawaiian reef creatures, such as the spotted eagle ray, lemon butterflyfish, green sea turtle, and the Humuhumu Nukunuku Apua’a, or reef triggerfish are colorfully depicted.  Dive and snorkeling sites around the island are located and described.  They include Ke’e Beach, Tunnels Reef, Poipu Beach Park, Koloa Landing, General Store, Mana Crack and many others.  Kauai’s best kayaking spots are also listed.  They include the Hanalei River, Anini Barrier Reef, Wailua River, Hanepepe River, Na Pali Coast amongst others.  The islands main recreations areas, water falls, trails, camping, and all of it’s major roads and highways to tell you how to get there are shown.

nd points of interest, such as Spouting Horn and the National Tropical Botanical Garden are listed.  The South Shore also has a listing of 15 scuba diving and snorkeling spots, with a descriptions from Franko’s personal experiences in exploring there (I call this map research work).  They include Brennecke’s Ledge, Nukumoi Point, Po’ipu Beach, Icebox, Sheraton Caverns (The top boat dive spot around Kaua’i), Koloa Landing (the best shore dive on the South Shore), Prince Kuhio Park (the best turtle watching spot for snorkelers), Beach House Arch, Beach House (a.k.a. Franko's O'ahu Surfing Map

Franko's O'ahu Surfing Map

Side 1 shows Franko’s O’ahu Surfing Map, which depicts O’ahu exactly the same as on Franko’s Map of O’ahu, The Gathering Place for the land mass, but replaces all of the fishes, dive sites and other information with all of the surfing sites and descriptions. O’ahu, of course, is the surfing capital of the world, and thus it deserves the respect of a super-high quality surfing map. This is it. Over 150 surfing spots are shown and described on the two sides of this map. Side one also shows photos of famous surfing spots, including Waimea, Bowls, Sandy Beach and more. A tribute is made to Duke Kahanamoku, the Father of Modern Day Surfing, with a turn-of-the-20th century photograph. Amongst the numerous surfing spots shown and described on Side 1 are Makaha, Point Panic, Sandy Beach, Pounders, Sunset Beach, Banzai Pipeline, Waimea Bay, Hale’iwa, and on and on. However, it is Side two that the viewer will find the most detail, as it zooms in on the famous North Shore and the heavily visited South Shore.

Side 2 shows Franko’s O’ahu Surfing Map North Shore & South Shore Details. The North Shore has a collection of perhaps half of the world’s top ten surfing spots. Sunset Beach, Rocky Point, Banzai Pipeline, Log Cabins, Chun’s Reef, Jocko’s, Hultin’s, and Hale’iwa are just a start. There are also a collection of photos depicting the beauty and power of North Shore surfing. Surprisingly, there are an equal number of spots detailed on the Oahu South Shore as well. Sites like Point Panic, Bowls, Canoes, Queen’s, Old Man’s, Suicides, Cliffs, Sandy Beach and Makapu’u are just a start. The roads map shows the viewer how to get to these spots as well.
